The story picks up a substantial while after the emotionally wrecking drama of ‘Death In Heaven’. Yet somehow, despite striving for an adventure that's as scary as it is comically jolly, it seems to have successfully struck a balance between the two. Thankfully, Season 8's Christmas episode fits neatly and appropriately in with the rest of the year's darker tone and overarching story beats. The need to balance festive feel-good fun-times with sci-fi drama has always sat somewhat uneasily, resulting in a host of shoehorned yuletide references and some notably family-friendly fare - but it’s a tradition that's always given a pass because, hey, *adopts Noddy Holder voice* it's Chriiiiistmaaaaas. Were we to be brutally, scrooge-ly honest, Doctor Who's Christmas episodes have always bordered on being a little naff. Beware of "Last Christmas" SPOILERS ahead.
